Connecting your brokerage and crypto accounts

How the SnapTrade connection works, what we can and can't see, and how to fix a broken link.

Connections run through SnapTrade, a regulated aggregation provider that supports most major US brokerages plus crypto accounts like Coinbase. You authenticate directly with your broker — we never see or store your brokerage password.

  1. 1

    Open the connect wizard

From My portfolio, choose Connect account and pick your institution from the list.

  2. 2

    Log in at your broker

You're handed to your broker's own login and, where required, its two-factor prompt.

  3. 3

    Approve access

The connection starts read-only: positions, balances, cost basis and history. Trading is a separate, explicit authorisation.

  4. 4

    Wait for the first sync

Positions usually appear within a minute or two. The sync indicator tells you when it finished.

What we can and can't do

  • We can read positions, cash, cost basis, balances and history so the tools can analyse them.
  • We cannot move, withdraw or transfer money — ever, on any connection type.
  • We cannot place trades until you separately authorise trading on that specific account.
  • You can disconnect an account at any time from the portfolio page, which stops all syncing.

If holdings don't appear

  • Force a refresh from the sync indicator — some brokers only publish positions on a delay.
  • Check that the account you linked is the one holding the positions; joint, IRA and individual accounts link separately.
  • Crypto exchange balances land in the Crypto section rather than the equity holdings table.
  • If the link shows an error, reconnect it from the same wizard — expired broker credentials are the usual cause.

Connect the same brokerage login once. Duplicate connections can double-count positions until the older link is removed.
